What is Emotional Intelligence?

Emotional intelligence comprises four core skills which fall into two categories – personal competence and social competence.

Personal Competence is the ability to be aware of your emotions and to manage your instinctive responses and behaviour.

  • Self-Awareness allows you to become more aware of and to accurately interpret your emotions and instinctive responses.
  • Self-Management allows you to use this awareness to guide your behaviour.

Social Competence involves understanding other people’s emotions, motives and behaviour, enabling you to manage your relationships – personal and professional.

  • Social Awareness is your ability to accurately assess emotions in others and the hidden dynamics
  • Relationship Management is using your awareness in the other three areas to manage personal interactions successfully.
